Case studies in acupuncture therapy

The following stories are true and have been modified only to preserve client confidentiality.

Marion: Finding her way

Marion was in her mid-thirties, having a pattern of failed relationships, feeling seriously depressed, extremely tired and desperately lonely.   She was all over the place and had fallen out with most of her friends.   Her eyes were dead and soulless.   Her work was suffering.

We agreed to begin with acupuncture therapy as this seemed the most appropriate way to begin to help Marion address her problems.   The initial treatment was aimed at returning the spark to Marion's eyes as well as cleansing and restoring her own natural protective energy.   Marion's subsequent treatments (eight over a three month period) were focused on points associated with the Earth element, which seemed the speediest way to address her problems.

After the first treatment she seemed lighter and brighter.   Over the next few weeks Marion rapidly regained her confidence and zest for life.  She no longer seemed depressed, was clearer about what she wanted or did not want in her life and was much more optimistic.  Her work was going well and she was no longer tired.

Part way through treatment although she still desperately wanted a relationship she began to recognise that she was not quite ready for that.  She was changing so quickly that her friends were commenting on how well she looked and how different she seemed.   There was a confidence about her and three months after starting treatment Marion began a promising new relationship with a sense of realism and a feeling that this time it would be different.  Several months later things were still going well.

Of course it takes two to work at a relationship and Marion was to discover that she was doing all the work.  Whilst it was hard when this relationship ended, she was not devastated and was able to pick up the pieces much more easily than before.  It was not long before she met someone else.

Peter: On the brink of giving up

Peter was having shoulder and leg problems.   He was working to help deprived youngsters find their feet in life, something he had had to do himself.   Despite Peter looking outwardly strong and pushing himself to be as physically fit as he could be, it seemed as though some part of him had had enough and was giving up.   He disliked having a physical injury and was not used to being touched, but determined to have treatment.

This sense of giving up also showed on the pulses in his wrists as an energy block, which, once cleared, allowed his body to draw on its own inner healing resources.

Treatments using points on the Metal element we geared to supporting him as he bravely began to talk more about his life, of having been abused as a child, of how he might improve his relationships and personal life.  He got in touch with his emotions for what he said was the first time.   Peter began to listen to his inner voice and understand how treatment was enabling him to become the person he always knew was hidden inside of him who had been scared to come out.

Peter felt he was back in control of his life.  He chose to exercise more moderately and for fun and he felt stronger and healthier.  His shoulder and leg problems had cleared up and Peter said he felt met, totally accepted and understood in a way that he had never been before.

Jane: Wanting a baby

Jane was nearly forty and a highly intelligent, career lady.   Her periods were irregular and she was having difficulty falling pregnant.  Her research indicated that acupuncture would help.  She came to see me, saying she had three months in which to become pregnant otherwise she planned to start IVF treatment.

It was clear that she had many stresses in her life.  She set herself targets and stuck to them.  Reading between the lines, it seemed that her partner was much more laid back and ambivalent about having a child.  She thought getting pregnant was largely a matter of timing and was monitoring her ovulation.  She was extremely disappointed each time her period arrived.

We looked at how she might prepare herself, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and at how she might rediscover the pleasure and intimacy of intercourse, which was missing in her life.  Treatment was aimed at harmonising her menstrual cycle, reducing her stress and ensuring that she was in a state of balance where she might conceive naturally.

Too slowly for her things began to change for the better.  Jane stopped coming to see me and opted for IVF which did not work.  It was some two years later that she contacted me to thank me and say she had just given birth to a son.  She now understood how important the acupuncture had been in helping her to strengthen her relationship and prepare for pregnancy and motherhood.

The impact of treatment can continue well after treatment has stopped.  Jane had to change how she lived her life in order that her dream could become a reality.
